President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently on state visit to Qatar, has restated his strong support for the self-determination of Palestinian State.
Tthe United Nations main documents say:All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”
Nigeria now survives a revival in secessionist movement in southeastern Nigeria, among supporters of the historical state of Biafra, threatens to undermine Buhari’s vision of a united Nigeria and spill over into regional violence.
However, the president during his first media chat queried the rationale behind the ongoing protest and agitation for a Biafra republic.
Femi Adesina, president’s spokesman, quoted Buhari as declaring support for the self-determination of Palestine during a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hammad Al-Thani, on February 28.

He said: “I want to assure you that we will stand side by side with you, until our brothers and sisters in Palestine achieve their desired objectives.”
“Our support for various Security Council resolutions restoring and respecting 1967 boundaries with Jerusalem as capital of Palestine is firm and unshaken.”
President Buhari called for a lasting solution to the Israeli – Palestinian conflict , saying “we in Nigeria, like the State of Qatar, favour a ‘Two State’ solution, with the State of Palestine living side by side with the State of Israel.”
During the meeting the leader of the nation also announced as “totally unacceptable,” the big drop in the price of crude which has seen global oil prices fall from over $100 a barrel last year to about $30.
The statement reads in part: “The current market situation in the oil industry is unsustainable and totally unacceptable.
“We must cooperate both within and outside our respective organisations to find a common ground to stabilize the market, which will be beneficial to our nations.”

Buhari’s position on the Israeli-Palestine conflict is similar with that of most countries of the world comprising the European Union, and Qatar is considered to be one of the key supporters of Palestine.
Qatar was even believed to be one of the mediators of the conflict.
Meanwhile, Israel and the United States have constantly stopped any United Nations resolution mandating a two-state solution.
During the UN General Assembly held in the US, the Nigerian president, was quoted to have pleaded with the world leaders to listen to the Palestine and the Western Sahara and grant them independence.
