LATEST ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Kevin Friend is friendless at Anfield as he makes it 10vs10. Tom Maston reports:

It's 10 v 10 now and the controversy continues at Anfield. Mark Noble is awarded a free-kick having been tripped by James Milner but in his pursuit of the ball catches Danny Ings. It looks a little harsh but the West Ham captain is off.

Our correspondent Tom Maston at Anfield:

Other than a couple of decent runs from Danny Ings, Liverpool have shown nothing to suggest they will get back into this. West Ham's fans are cheering every pass their side make and look set to be celebrating a second away win of the season in around 25 minutes time.

This one is over then, everybody. After Yaya Toure's free kick hits the wall, the ball drops to David Silva on the edge of the box and he slides in Fernandinho down the outside, who leathers a shot acros goal and into the net. This will be 10 consectutive top-flight wins for City, a club record.

Liverpool's task just got a whole lot harder after Philippe Coutinho - booked needlessly for dissent late in the first half - receives a second booking after he brings down Dmitri Payet as the midfielder looks to turn past him in midfield. Coutinho will miss the match against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Like West Ham, Man City are eyeing an history victory today but Watford are proving a tough nut to crack. Our correspondent Sammy Lee reports:

Half-time and we have no goals at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City have had all of the ball but the attack isn't clicking so far, and while Watford have been camped in their own box, they haven't looked too uncomfortable. Raheem Sterling came closest to opening the scoring but his low shot was turned behind for a corner. Goalless, but still expecting a breakthrough after the interval.

 BOOS AT ANFIELD

West Ham are on course for a famous victory at Anfield, their first since 1963, and our man Tom Maston says the locals aren't best impressed by what they've seen in the first half.

A smattering of boos from the home crowd greet the half-time whistle at Anfield after what was a pretty abject first-half showing from Liverpool.  CITY LACKING CUTTING EDGE

Our man Sammy Lee at the Etihad:

Sergio Aguero gets an inch of space on the edge of the area, turns and fires a shot at goal. I expected the net to bulge, but it was quite a way wide in the end. Heurelho Gomes takes a while over his goal kick, which has been a theme of the first half.

Soon after, side on to goal, Jesus Navas fires a left-footed cross directly in front of him and out of play on the far side. Allan Nyom ducks so he doesn't get hit. Cutting edge lacking from Manchester City.

 LOVREN ERROR

More on that second West Ham goal from our man Tom Maston at Anfield:

Four games in, and we have Dejan Lovren's first big mistake of the season. The Liverpool centre-back - possibly distracted by the linesman falling over next to him - is robbed by Manuel Lanzini who drives into the box. His cross is cleared, but the ball falls to Mark Noble who slots his effort past Simon Mignolet. Good one for Liverpool to win from here.

Our man Sammy Lee at the Etihad:

So close to an opener! Raheem Sterling darts around the outside of his full-back over on the left and his low shot is just about saved by Heurelho Gomes, who manages to squirm it behind for a corner. Our man Tom Maston at Anfield says the tide is turning:

Twenty minutes gone at Anfield and Liverpool are certainly beginning to dominate, with their best effort coming from Roberto Firmino as he hit the post from 25 yards on the 10th minute. The Reds still look a little rattled defensively, however, and goalscorer Manuel Lanzini could have made it 2-0 when he was allowed to run with the ball from the halfway line, but his eventual shot faded well wide of the post.

 MCCLAREN REACTION: REFEREE 'RASH'

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren said referee Andre Marriner was 'rash' to send off Aleksander Mitrovic in today's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at St. James' Park.

"It’s very difficult to win with 10 men especially against teams that can keep the ball," McClaren said.

"Moussa Sissoko had a similar one that was given yellow.

"I’ve seen it over and over. The ball has come over his head, his eyes are on the ball and he’s stamped on his foot. He wasn’t look at the man, there wasn’t any intent. I definitely don’t think it was dangerous. It was clumsy but I’ve seen plenty of clumsy challenges. It’s a contact sport.

"I know him well. There’s no intent in anything he does. He just wants to win the ball, he’s a winner.

"He’s only played a couple of games. Maybe referees are too busy watching Match of the Day instead of assessing their own game. That can be a problem.

"I hope we can appeal because we will will. We will probably lose it. You can gauge a lot from the players - even the Arsenal players looked surprise. They weren’t appealing.

"I wouldn’t say that was a dirty game and we’ve kicked them off the park. They were fouls and the referee has reacted to harshly with all of them. He was rash."

 SCARE FOR CITY

Man City are the red hot favourites to make it a club-record 10 consecutive home wins against Watford today but there has been an early scare for the hosts, as our man Sammy Lee at the Etihad reports:

A scramble in the area very nearly provides the opening goal of the afternoon... for Watford! Vincent Kompany and Eliaquqim Mangala stand up strong, though, and after Craig Cathcart's effort is blocked, the hosts clear a couple of crosses and break away. Raheem STerling could have done better, in fact, but the ball bounces off his shin in the box and it's away for a corner at the other end.

 WENGER REACTION

More from Arsene Wenger on Arsenal's 1-0 win over 10 man Newcastle at St. James' Park and the Gunners boss said his side's victory was about 'patience and nerves'.

"It was about patience and nerves," Wenger said.

"We needed not to rush our game and to wait for our chances and take one of them. Newcastle decided from the start to make the game quite physical, we had to keep our nerve and not become aggressive as well.

"It was a strange game after that. They played 15 yards deeper with 10 against nine in the final third. We didn’t find the space and they defended well. We are happy in the end to win the three points.

"Newcastle wanted to stop us from playing and they tried that from the start."

In classic fashion, the Frenchman said he didn't see the incident that led to Aleksander Mitrovic's red card but insisted it was a sending off.

"Honestly during the game I didn’t see it. I’ve just seen it on television and he didn’t get the ball, it’s a red card.

"Did he do it on purpose? I don’t know."

"We know we will turn it around at home. It was important mathematically not to drop points today and be too far behind the top teams."

On Theo Walcott's disappointing afternoon, Wenger said: "I expected more space for Theo but after 15 minutes it was a different problem for us. There was no space behind their defenders.

"We are open if we find an exceptional player in any sector we will do it. Whether something will happen, I don’t know."

 WENGER REACTION

Arsene Wenger says Newcastle, who had six players booked, 'toughened the game up' but felt his side coped with the hosts' aggressive approach.

"They toughened the game up and decided from the start to make the game very committed, very physical. We had problems to cope with it but we kept our nerve."

Asked about transfer business, Wenger said his side were 'out there' but claimed he couldn't predict if the club would sign a new striker before Tuesday's deadline.

"Look, are are out there and working on it. I am optimistic but not more than before and not less. It's just these kinds of things it very difficult to protect.

"We still have Welbeck out, Wilshere out, we have offensive potential, no Ozil today, all offensive players.

"You want always more goal scorers but I believe that at the moment we have not fired on all cylinders offensively, our finishing has maybe not been absolutely clinical and we have to work on that.

"I have experience but even with experience that is not predictable."

 ARSENAL DOMINANT BUT MISFIRING

Arsenal beat 10 man Newcastle 1-0 in the early kick-off but our man Greg Stobart at St. James' Park thinks the match highlighted familiar failings in front of goal for the Gunners:

After a start to the season described as “very average” by Arsene Wenger, all that mattered today for Arsenal was the result. So they owe Aleksandar Mitrovic a huge debt of thanks for the Newcastle striker’s ridiculous studs-up challenge on Francis Coquelin that resulted in a red car in the 16th minute.

From then on, Arsenal had no excuses. They made hard work of it but eventually got over the line after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s second-half strike forced an own goal off Fabricio Coloccini.

The Gunners dominated possession, as you would expect, but found it difficult to break down Newcastle’s well-organised defence in front of a hostile crowd here at St James’ Park. When Wenger’s side did create openings, Theo Walcott fluffed his lines on the day his was selected ahead of Olivier Giroud.

And despite the result, Arsenal’s all-too-familiar struggles in front of goal once again brought home the need for a ruthless striker who can put opponents to the sword on games like today.

 HAMMERS' BENCH LACKING EXPERIENCE

All the team news is in and our man at Anfield, Tom Maston, thinks Slaven Bilic's West Ham XI has enough to trouble Liverpool, despite the Croat's pre-match comments:

Slaven Bilic has claimed he may park a 'triple-decker bus' at Anfield this afternoon, but his West Ham team shows enough attacking intent with the inclusion of Manuel Lanzini and Diafra Sakho to possibly trouble Liverpool. It is his bench that poses more questions with only Matt Jarvis among the seven on the bench to have made more than two Premier League appearances. The Reds, meanwhile, are unchanged from their goalless draw with Arsenal.
