Three men dressed as  female suicide bombers riding on a tricycle Thursday evening killed unspecified number of people and injured several others at Sajeri area of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state which has been the hotbed of Boko Haram's insurgency.

Nigeria Independence Day: Buhari addresses nation to commemorate 'liberation from colonialism' [Full speech]

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has addressed the nation in a televised speech to mark the 55th anniversary of the country's independence. Independence Day, celebrated on 1 October, marks the end of British colonial rule in territories that form modern-day Nigeria.
Buhari delievered the speech one day after he returned from New York, where he attended the 70th session of the United Nations Assembly, where he urged the international community to dismantle safe havens and help repatriate funds he alleged belong to Nigeria. The president also reiterated his country's commitment to tackling climate change and eradicating terrorism in the region.

30 September 2015 – The humanitarian fallout from the violence inflicted by Boko Haram is the fastest growing crisis in Africa, a senior United Nations relief official warned today, appealing for concerted action on the humanitarian, security and development fronts to tackle the situation.
Recurrent conflict, erratic weather patterns, epidemics and other shocks continue to weaken the resilience of households across the Sahel region, which suffers from chronic levels of food insecurity and malnutrition.
On top of that, violent conflict has led to a surge in population displacement in and around the region, which is one of the poorest in the world and home to 140 million people.

NIGERIA: 55 years of what?

TODAY, Nigeria is expected to have a low key celebration to mark the 55th anniversary of its political independence from our colonial masters. Perhaps, the anniversary is celebrated without fanfare or pomp and pageantry in acknowledgement of the global and widespread economic crisis that is top on the agenda of most developed, developing and least developed nations. In addition, the security situation, occasioned by the impudent acts of insurgents who are still keeping our beloved Chibok girls makes our celebration a cautious one.
It is also possible that the avoidance of any form of gloating in our celebrations is a clear acceptance of the argument of the majority that we are yet to arrive at our destination fifty five years after the journey began. Does any nation ever arrive at its destination or is the life of a nation a continuous journey punctuated by events whether remarkable or not?
Yet again, one may ask, when did the life of this country begin?   Some would say it began in 1914 when the amalgamation of the Northern Protectorate with its counterpart, the Southern Protectorate was achieved.
